Celebrating Michaelmas Together

Michaelmas is the festival which really celebrates Autumn and allows us to revel in the darker nights and cooler days without a sadness for the Summer passed. The light is lower, and shadows longer, and we start to look inward to our own inner strength and reserves – like a flower we opened up to the sun during the summer, and now we can fold our petals in and take strength and sustenance from the world under our feet.

Michaelmas is named after Saint Michael, one of the four archangels, the angel who threw Lucifer out of Heaven. He is the Angel of courage and the Angel of the fight against evil, often depicted fighting off fearsome dragons! The festival of Michaelmas is the moment when we can take the light and love that has warmed us through the summer months into ourselves to feed us as we enter the colder, darker months of autumn and winter.

“When a knight won his sKnightspurs, in the stories of old,
He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand,
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventu
re and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
‘Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth.”
Jan Struther & Ralph Vaughan Williams

Our favourite Michaelmas Story comes from the very wonderful Tiptoes Lightly “The Festival of the Stones”. http://www.tiptoes-lightly.net/ Here is a little extract:

“But the dragon never forgot, and never quite gave up. He remembers his beauty from long ago, and rises out of the earth in early summer to fly high in the air. Then, as summer ends, a shower of shooting stars beats the dragon back into the earth with swords of heavenly iron”

As we were growing up, we always enjoyed the meteor shower of shooting stars in late August in the night sky, and used to weave a story as to why they are showering down on us at this time of year…  and in later years, Michaelmas had become a time in the year which we rather dreaded – it all felt rather heavy and fearsome, but finding Tiptoes with our children allowed us see the beauty of the date, the 29th September. It is a very special day!

Our Michaelmas Autumn Hedgerow Dragon

Our Michaelmas Autumn Hedgerow Dragon

Making dragon bread is always a wonderful family activity, or making dragon’s from conkers is great fun too!

To bring the light of St Michael into our homes, we can light a new candle at the supper table. Always a favourite activity at Kindi was to make a candle each using strips of wax wound around the candle to become the dragon, and as the candle burns, the flame slowly conquers the dragon until he is banished completely!

As you light your Michaelmas candle this year, perhaps you will have the dinosaur pasta on your little ones’ plates, so that they can be St. Michael fearlessly fighting dragons, just like Jeremy Mouse in the Tiptoes Story. http://www.ulula.co.uk/alb-gold-organic-pasta-for-babies-and-kids-dinosaur-shapes.html

Organic Gluten Free Pasta Fusilli

I recently wrote about our new gluten free pasta for kids in fun dino shapes. Today, I thought I’d mention the latest addition to our gluten free pasta range the Seitz organic gluten free fusilli. There’s also a great lentil bolognese recipe below that goes really well with the fusilli (as well as any other pasta) and is suitable for young children and, of course, adults.

Gluten free buckwheat fusilli

Organic Gluten Free Pasta – Buckwheat Fusilli

This organic buckwheat pasta is not only gluten free but also looks great on the plate. The striking black shapes appeal to kids and adults alike and makes for a fascinating combination on the plate with many sauces.

The slightly nutty flavour is delicious and goes well with practically any sauce of your choice. We’ve tried it with tomato and cheese based sauces, as well as red and green pestos, and it really is lovely. Customers have told us this gluten free pasta goes particularly well with fish.

How is it to cook with? Unlike many gluten free pasta varieties this fusilli keeps its shape very well after cooking, as you can see in the photo below. This makes it an ideal gluten free option for use in a great looking pasta salad for lunch or even for picnics or lunchboxes.

Pasta that is Guaranteed Gluten Free

Seitz is an established family owned business in Germany that has longstanding experience in producing gluten free products and particularly pasta. Their production line is used soley for producing gluten free products, so this fusilli is guaranteed gluten free.

Recipe Idea – Gluten Free Fusilli with Lentil Bolognese

Just like pasta, red lentils should be a staple in your larder. Especially if you are cooking for young children – red lentils are a perfect source for protein, potassium, phosphorus and iron. This is a super quick recipe for busy families that tastes delicious and creates a visual treat when combined with the black Seitz gluten free fusilli. Of course, red lentils are also gluten free so this makes it a great sauce to combine with the fusilli if gluten in your diet is an issue for you or your child.

This recipe is a firm favourite in our family – let me know how you get on.

Gluten Free Pasta for Kids

A new gluten free pasta for kids that isn’t just guaranteed ‘free from’ but is certified organic and comes in fun dinosaur shapes for younger children.

Gluten free pasta for kids by Seitz

Finding tasty gluten free food suitable for children can be a real challenge. That is why the Ulula team is so pleased to be able to stock this latest addition to our kids pasta range. Now you can buy top quality gluten free pasta for kids without having to worry, as this new pasta from Seitz is produced in a factory that doesn’t handle any food stuffs containing gluten. Seitz is a long established family owned business from Germany that has many years experience of producing gluten free products, pasta in particular.

Our new gluten free pasta for kids comes in the great dino shapes that have proven so popular in our non allergy-aware children’s pasta range. Now having a special dietary need doesn’t mean your child has to feel different to the rest of the family or friends when they come round for tea. And, of course, being certified organic you know your child isn’t going to be eating lots of chemical nasties with these fun pasta shapes – an important consideration when feeding kids with special dietary needs.

Seitz Gluten Free Pasta for Kids – on the Plate

The Seitz pasta shapes are made from organic corn flour and organic rice flour and have a slightly longer cooking time than you’d perhaps expect, around 11-13 minutes – just check and adjust cooking time to your preferred texture. Most importantly, and unlike many gluten free pastas for kids on the market, the Sietz dinos retain their distinctive shapes when fully cooked. So, no more sloppy mess that doesn’t appeal to anyone, let alone a young child!

Our taster testers were not only impressed by how these pasta shapes looked on the plate but also their taste. They all said their children enjoyed the mild taste that complemented a variety of sauces. Here’s one of our favourite comments:

“A great gluten-free pasta that my little one just gobbled up. It went down so fast I didn’t think he could have had time to taste it, but when I asked he said the dinos were ‘yummy’. Will definitely give him these again.”

The Seitz Gluten Free Pasta for Kids in Dino Shapes come in child friendly pack sizes of 250g and, depending on your child’s age and appetite, our testers suggest that would give your little one about five portions. Single packs cost only £2.29 and you can buy a multi-pack of three for £6.57.

Let us know how you find the Seitz gluten free pasta for kids. Why not send the receipe for your child’s favourite gluten free sauce or accompaniment and we’ll share it here with other parents.

Organic Pasta for Babies and Children – Now Available

Animal shape pasta for babies and kids

Animal shaped pasta for babies and kids

I am really pleased to announce the arrival on the Ulula website of our organic pasta for babies and children. If you’ve not seen them already, take a look and see why I’m so excited.

Pasta is always a children’s favourite and these three fun pasta shapes are ideal for slightly older babies and children of all ages. Pasta is highly nutritious and a great energy source for your growing baby or child. From 8 to 10 months your baby usually needs more lumpy food and this lovely shaped organic pasta will help to encourage chewing and introduce variety.

In Search of the Best Pasta for Babies and Children

I spent a long time searching for a pasta that I would be happy to sell to discerning mums and dads. I wanted a pasta small enough for young babies’ mouths; that kids would enjoy eating because they easily recognise the varied shapes; and that is made from the highest quality ingredients by a company that really cares about both food and the environment.

These new pastas come from Alb Gold, a traditional family-owned company with a proven organic background and who take great care in not only choosing their raw ingredients but also how each pasta is made. As usual with the food I stock on Ulula, you are guaranteed that you will only be feeding your baby food that has not been grown with the use of artificial pesticides or fertilisers and which has no artificial preservatives, colourings or any other chemical nasty. I only stock those foods that I am happy to feed to my own family.

Tested by Babies – Approved by Mums

And so, how do these pastas for babies measure up? As usual, we asked family and friends to taste test these pasta shapes with their babies and children. Without exception the feedback was great – a particular favourite with the youngest children were the farm animal pasta shapes, while older children loved the roaring safari animal pasta shapes and the dinosaur pasta shapes. A definite winner with babies, children and mums and dads alike.

Mums and dads told us how their little ones ‘loved the animal shapes’, ‘had fun making all sorts of animal noises’ and several commented how ‘having such fun at meal times encouraged him to eat everything in his bowl.’

These delightful pasta animals are specially developed for babies and children and, as such, are small enough for your baby’s mouth – so no choking on adult sized pasta. And every animal piece keeps its shape even after cooking – which makes it great fun to eat as your baby spots the animals he or she knows.

Pasta for Babies and Children – Now Available

Each of the pastas for babies and children is available as single packets as well as in multi-packs of three. There is even a multi-pack with one packet of each pasta shape, which is aleady proving very popular. And, with 10 portions per pack they really are excellent value!

So, take a look at the new organic pasta for babies and children range and tell us what you think.
