Preparing Purees for Weaning Babies – Watch a Free Video

A very popular product on the Ulula website is our glass grater for helping busy mums to prepare homemade baby food recipes when weaning their baby. Watch our short video to see just how simple and easy it is to use – it’s pretty amazing.

Glass graters have been used for generations by mums to prepare pureed fruit and vegetables when first weaning their babies. Using a glass grater gives you exactly the right consistency of fruit or vegetables you need when preparing your home made baby food. Experience shows us that no other grater can achieve this consistency with so little mess or waste.

We’re proud to be the exclusive UK suppliers of the glass grater. We are pleased also with our little video clip (it’s regularly downloaded by hundreds of site visitors) showing how to use the grater.

Dear Sabine
I just wanted to thank you for suggesting the glass grater…I was slicing my fingers on the metal grater before and willing to try anything! I have to say when it arrived I looked at it and thought it could not possibly work. However, I was amazed at how easy it is to use (and clean!) and what smooth, fresh, puree it makes!
So many thanks!
Kind regards

Weaning Babies, Strawberries and Allergies – Plus a Quick Summer Recipe For Older Babies

Strawberries - exercise caution when weaning babies

Strawberries - exercise caution when weaning babies

Ever since the ancient Romans introduced strawberries to Britain two thousand years ago they have been a firm summer favourite – and rightly so in my opinion. Not only are they delicious, they contain more vitamin C than oranges and are rich in fibre.

Weaning Babies and Strawberries

Please remember though at this time year that strawberries are reported to cause allergies or an intolerance in babies and young children from time to time. If your baby is still under one year old and is weaning, perhaps consider waiting to introduce strawberries until next season. I would suggest this should particularly be the case if there is a family history of allergic reactions and/or asthma or eczema.

Because strawberries are such a soft fruit that readily absorb pesticidal sprays it is also important to try and buy organic strawberries for your baby or child.

A Quick Strawberry Ice Lolly Recipe

Try blending five strawberries with one banana, four ice cubes, a strawberry yoghurt, half a cup each of milk and fruit juice. Pour the liquid into paper cups, cover with plastic wrap and insert a lolly stick. Freeze for at least five hours – healthy homemade strawberry lollies for older babies and children!

Next Day Delivery of Organic Baby Food

I had two emails from customers last weekend asking if I could add some items of organic baby food into their latest order before sending it out. Of course, normally that would be no problem – I shop online myself and know that I don’t always remember everything.

Unfortunately, for both these customers I had already despatched the orders and the customers were left deciding whether to incur additional delivery charges or wait until their next order. My apologies to Sophie and Di.

Personal and Flexible Online Shopping

When we receive your baby food orders we aim to ship everything out within 24 hours. Unlike many online shops we don’t charge a premium for next day delivery because we aren’t in a position to actually guarantee it, but I think we can be rightly proud of the fact that over 90% of all Ulula orders are received by the customer the next day (in the UK).

At the same time, we aim to offer a very personal and individualised shopping experience and would like you to have the flexibility of adding anything to your baby food order that you may have forgotten. So, could I emphasise to all our customers that if you need to add anything to your order, please do try and let me know as soon as possible so we can pop it in the parcel before it is sent out. Either send a message using the contact form available from every page on the site, or just give me a ring.

We alway welcome feedback on our organic baby foods as well as the service we provide. Let us know how we can improve the site to make your shopping experience as hassle-free as possible.

Using a Glass Grater to Make Purees for Weaning Babies

Since yesterday’s post with a story about a grandmother wanting to buy two glass graters, I have been asked by a number of customers if I could make the video of using the glass grater available as a file to download so they could more easily show family and friends.

Of course, if you would prefer you can always watch the video in the page of yesterday’s post, and read the lovely story of how the customer came to buy two glass graters in the first place.

You have to see it to believe just easily and quickly you can make the perfect purees for weaning your baby.

Lovely Story on Making Purees For Weaning a Baby When Out and About

I was told a really nice story recently when a grandmother phoned wanting to buy two of our popular glass graters. When I said that it is unusual for someone to buy two at a time she told me that they were actually for two of her daughters, one of whom is pregnant and the other has a baby coming up to weaning age – neither of who were yet customers of Ulula.

The grandmother explained that her third daughter – who is a Ulula customer – had previously bought a glass grater and the four of them had all that day gone out for lunch in their local Marks and Spencer cafe. She told me:

“We got our meals and sat down. My daughter reached into her baby’s bag and brought out her glass grater – none of us had seen it before. Then she took out an apple and a banana. She cut the apple into four and there and then made the baby’s lunch! She just quickly rubbed the apple on the grater, mashed in a bit of banana and mixed it all togther. The whole thing was ready in a minute. My other two daughters sat there amazed. All I heard during lunch was how good the glass graters are and how they had to buy one.”

So, as soon as she got home she thought she would treat her daughters and buy them both a glass grater. How sweet!

I thought I would repost our short video showing just how quick and easy our glass grater is at making purees when weaning your baby. It really does have to be seen to be believed.

Share your glass grater stories and tell other mums how it helps you wean your baby, wherever you are.

Late Night Shopping for Baby Food – You Are Not Alone

Sleeping baby - sent in by a customer

Sleeping baby - sent in by a customer

I was working late last night and happened to be looking through the orders that we have received over the last few weeks or so. Despite it being late I noticed that a significant number of customers placed their orders also at a late hour – sometimes extremely late.

Crying Babies

I could image the situations that led to mums and dads being up so late and sat at their computer and they all revolved around crying babies. Perhaps the baby was hungry and needed another feed, or perhaps he or she was teething or had a soiled nappy.

You are Not Alone

So, if you happen to be reading this late at night having been woken by your crying baby, I can sympathise with you. I have been there, I have done that. It will get better, your baby will soon learn to sleep through and you will be able to enjoy an undisturbed sleep once again.

In the meantime, you are not alone. Remember other customers in the Ulula community are also shopping on the site – more likely than not just as you are reading this.

So, why not read a few articles, post a few comments and once your baby is sound asleep and tireness takes you over again slip off to bed yourself. Goodnight.

Recycling Organic Baby Food Jars – a Fun Picture

A quick, fun post today. Regular reader of Sabine’s Organic Baby Food Blog will know that I am passionate about re-using and recycling materials. And of course, all customers will see that I always try to recycle packing materials when Ulula sends out orders.

I am always curious as to just how much of what we send out goes on to be recycled once finished with. For example, do customers recycle the packaging that our baby foods come in? I recently came across the amazing picture below showing just how inventive people can be when it comes to recycling baby food jars. Yes, it really is a chandelier made with baby food jars! Apparently it is practically all made from recycled materials and cost just a few pounds to make.

Of course not everyone, myself  included, is creative enough or has the skills, materials or even inclination to make a chandelier from baby food jars!

I have, though, come across some other, more down to earth, suggestions. How about using the baby food jars as containers for dried herbs in the kitchen? Or as paint pots for older children?

Do you just put your empty organic baby food jars in the recycle bin, or are you a little more creative with them? Share your thoughts and ideas.

Proud to Support Breastfeeding – Holle Organic Nursing Tea

I was really pleased to have been able to have breastfed all three of my children, and having done so I have some appreciation of some of the potential difficulties new mums can face when trying to breastfeed newborns as well as older babies. I do, though, also know the pleasures, the rewards and the sheer joy this close and intimate experience can bring to a relationship with a newborn baby.

I am then proud to be selling the Holle Organic Nursing Teas to help support mums at this vital time. This herbal infusion is formulated to naturally encourage lactation in breastfeeding mums. This tasty tea is a comforting drink created to enhance the nursing experience and comes in easy to brew tea bags.

To provide more information on breastfeeding within the Ulula site I plan to write several introductory pages over the coming weeks. The first has just been uploaded and is all about the Organic Nursing Tea, it benefits and uses.

What have your experiences of breastfeeding been? If you tried the Holle Organic Nursing Tea, how did you find it? Let us know.

Committed to Recycling

Ulula is committed to recycling

Ulula is committed to recycling

This morning I sent out an order for two multi-packs of Holle’s Organic Three Grain Baby Porridge – nothing unusual in that. It wasn’t until I came to stick the Parcelforce delivery label on the box that it struck me how odd to be sending out some of the best and purest organic baby food that money can buy in a Spicy BBQ Hula Hoops crisp box!

When I first set up Ulula I bought in packaging materials and sent out every order in pristine, new boxes. It wasn’t long before I realised I was doing something very wasteful, and actually very against my principles – I can’t stand waste.

So, I talked to a number of local independent shopkeepers – my greengrocers, the healthfood shop in the next village, the garden centre and so on – and enlisted their support in supplying me with their unwanted boxes and packaging materials from their own deliveries. They were grateful to get rid of the packaging, and I am very pleased to be able to reuse and recycle most of the packaging I now use.

The only slight downside I can see to all this recycling is that it runs the risk of spoiling your street cred – imagine being known in the neighbourhood for eating wholesome, natural and organic food and being seen to have a delivery in a Spicy BBQ Hula Hoops crisp box! Seriously, thanks for your understanding and support in helping me run Ulula in an increasingly environmentally friendly way.

What about you, do you go on to recycle the packaging in which your baby food is sent? How could I be even more environmentally friendly when sending out your baby food? Let me know.
